How to Use Linen Spray Safely — and Make the Scent Last

Does Linen Spray Stain Fabric?

It's one of the most common questions we hear — and it's a fair one. The short answer: when used correctly, our Room+Linen Sprays are formulated to be fabric-safe. But fabric varies widely, and a little caution goes a long way.

Always Spot-Test First

Before spritzing freely, we recommend a spot test on any fabric you care about — especially silk, satin, velvet, or light-coloured linens. Here's how:

  1. Choose a hidden area of the fabric (an inside hem or pillowcase seam works well).
  2. Hold the bottle 20–30 cm (8–12 inches) away and mist lightly — one or two sprays only.
  3. Allow the area to dry completely before assessing for any discolouration or residue.
  4. If the fabric looks and feels the same after drying, you're good to go.

Note: Never apply directly to dry-clean-only garments, leather, suede, or untreated wood.

Direct Spray vs. Air Spray: Which Should You Use?

Both techniques work well — the right one depends on what you're scenting and the effect you want.

Air Spray (Recommended for rooms and most fabrics)

Hold the bottle 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) away and mist into the air above your bed, sofa, or room. Allow the fine droplets to settle naturally onto fabric and soft furnishings. This is the gentlest method and gives the most even distribution — ideal for delicate linens, bedding, and upholstered furniture.

Direct Spray (For sturdy, washable fabrics)

Direct application works well on items like cotton pillowcases, linen throws, curtains, and towels. Hold the bottle 20–30 cm away, use 2–3 light spritzes, and allow the fabric to air-dry before contact with skin. Avoid saturating any single area.

How Long Does the Scent Last?

Longevity depends on the fabric, the environment, and your application technique. As a general guide:

  • Soft furnishings and upholstery: 2–4 hours of noticeable scent throw, with a subtle lingering presence for longer.
  • Bedding and pillowcases: Most customers notice the fragrance most strongly within the first 1–2 hours after spraying; a light top-up before bed gives the best results.
  • Open rooms: Scent disperses more quickly in large or well-ventilated spaces. Misting into a confined space (like a wardrobe or linen cupboard) extends the effect significantly.
  • Denser fabrics: Heavier textiles such as wool throws and velvet cushions tend to hold fragrance longer than lightweight cotton.

Tips for Longer-Lasting Scent

  • Layer your scent — spritz bedding, a nearby cushion, and the air simultaneously for a more immersive effect.
  • Store your spray away from direct sunlight and heat to preserve fragrance integrity.
  • Shake lightly before each use.
  • A light mist on the underside of your pillow (where it's less exposed to air) prolongs the scent through the night.
